Lansink’s Ladder


Former Member of Parliament Lansink submitted a motion in 1979 regarding the desired management of waste. The Lansink Ladder ranks the most environmentally friendly methods of waste treatment. The higher a method is on the Lansink Ladder, the more environmentally friendly it is. The Lansink Ladder consists of the following steps:

  1. Waste prevention
  2. Product reuse
  3. Material reuse (recycling)
  4. Incineration with energy recovery
  5. Incineration
  6. Landfilling (prohibited for packaging in the Netherlands)
