Polyethylene furanoate (PEF)


PEF is a polyester that can be produced through a polycondensation reaction between FDCA (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) and MEG (monoethylene glycol). The combination of FDCA and plant-based MEG results in 100% plant-based PEF. It can be widely used in rigid packaging applications, such as bottles, jars, and trays, as well as in films through processes like blowing or extrusion. The material is chemically very similar to PET, but this small difference results in distinct performance properties.
