Definition Compostable packaging materials (before 12 Augustus 2026)
Compostable packaging materials are materials that comply with the European Standard EN 13432. This standard is based on a degradation process for compostable plastics of a maximum of 12 weeks at approximately 60 degrees Celsius. However, Dutch composting facilities have a shorter composting process. Research by Food and Biobased Research of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) shows that composting processes in these facilities last approximately three weeks, while the Dutch Waste Management Association reports a period of two to four weeks.
